Gr 3—6—In the introduction, Cleary defines "mnemonic" and gives a few examples. Using songs, captions, sentences, poems, and numbers to aid in memorizing are all demonstrated. "Extra Credit" and "Read On" sections encourage research or add details. Colorful cartoons fill the pages. Educators may find an example or two to use in class with related lessons but many of the mnemonics are difficult to understand and/or remember.—Loreli E. Stochaj, Franklin School, Summit, NJ
This book presents mnemonics in the forms of acronyms, poems, songs, jump-rope rhymes, and raps to help students recall dates, U.S. presidents, and other social studies trivia. The examples are generally too convoluted (even for mnemonic devices) to be useful. Goggle-eyed characters overwhelmingly crowd the pages. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.
